Summary

Laurentius Hospital is a general hospital with 429 beds.  Annually, patients at our hospital are seen 190,000 times on an out-patient basis; approximately 12,000 patients are admitted yearly with an average length of stay of 8 days.  All major medical specialties are represented by the 90 medical specialists and  more than 1500 people are employed here spread across the various disciplines.

Our intensive care unit (ICU) and coronary care unit (CCU) are currently located on the same ward, and includes 9 and 8 beds, respectively.  Of the 9 ICU beds, 5 are available for patients receiving mechanical ventilation.  The other 4 beds can often be categorized as Medium Care beds.  Cardiology-related trials are implemented on a regular basis.

We find it important to keep our intensive care nursing staff properly schooled and up-to-date, and therefore each ICU nurse receives approximately 3 extra days of lessons on an array of subjects:  Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Life Support (ALS), Pulmonology, Cardiology, etc. . . We have various trainers in our team who are responsible for supplying some of these lessons.  Nurses on other hospital wards are also taught basic life support by our BLS/ALS trainers.

Within our team we currently have 2 Ventilation practitioners and a Circulation Practitioner, who also have an important task in maintaining theoretical and practical know-how on an substantial level.  There is also a Skills Lab, where the most common medical and nursing interventions can be practiced.
